Sonali Bendre may want a girl to win the title, but the boys from Indian Idol season 3 want a boy to win this time, too. However, before you level charges of sexism against them, you have to know why they want Kapil to win.
“We were rooting equally for Kapil, Sourabhee and Torsha. Then things changed drastically,” said Abhishek from season 3. “Ever since Prashant accompanied Sourabhee during her homecoming, there has been unrest in the north east. People claim Prashant betrayed the gurkhas, but he had never even thought along those lines. He had just done what he had been asked to do. Now if Sourabhee wins, Prashant and his family could be in danger. And we don’t want that. However, if Kapil wins there won’t be any trouble.”
When I asked around if things were really that bad, everyone answered in the affirmative. Turns out, they even wanted to fly down Prashant’s mother and sister to Mumbai for their safety.
I wish people wouldn’t politicise everything in India. If someone cheers for someone as part of their job, why do people want to read between the lines and find meanings that never existed in the first place? |
